The Kutai Mulawarman Kingdom, established around the 4th century CE in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, is recognized as one of the earliest Hindu kingdoms in Southeast Asia. Founded by Maharaja Kudungga, the kingdom reached its golden age under his grandson, Maharaja Mulawarman, whose reign was immortalized through the famous Yupa inscriptions — seven sacred stone pillars that stand as the oldest written records in Indonesian history. The royal seat of the kingdom is situated at Puri Karang Melenu, Tenggarong, in the heart of Kutai Kartanegara.
Situated along the mighty Mahakam River, the kingdom flourished as a vital center of trade, culture, and Hindu-Buddhist civilization. Maharaja Mulawarman was renowned for his generosity and devotion, performing grand ceremonies and charitable acts that earned the admiration of Brahmins across the region. The Yupa inscriptions describe him as a king of great virtue who donated 20,000 cattle to the Brahmins. The kingdom's historical significance is further evidenced by records of the VOC (Dutch East India Company) expedition to Muara Kaman in 1635, marking Kutai Mulawarman's enduring importance in regional geopolitics.
Today, the legacy of the Maharaja Berdaulat Kutai Mulawarman continues through its royal institution and the Kutai Mulawarman Royal Council. The kingdom maintains an elaborate structure including the Mahamenteri Agung (Prime Minister), Mahamangkubumi (Chief Administrator), and Mahasenapati Agung (Supreme General), along with international representatives (Duta Besar) across Southeast Asia. The Maharaja Community System (MCS) serves as the official registration platform, uniting individuals committed to preserving Nusantara's cultural traditions and royal heritage for future generations.
